SUMMER WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS - I

Following is the first of our 2-part update detailing the Summer Schedule at The Pomegranate Workshop. This Summer we bring you workshops in 3 locations: PRABHADEVI, BANDRA AND JUHU. We hope that you may plan your summer vacation and yet catch our special, unique offerings guaranteed to take your children to the next level of creative expression. WRITE IT, PAINT IT, ACT IT!

Before the curtain is raised, before the lights come on – that’s when dreams are spun. Write It, Paint It, Act it takes children to the root of the creative process: where ideas are hatched, stories are made and the stage is set. At Write It, Paint It, Act it, children will ideate, create and develop a single concept or story on all fronts – writing, art and performance – and build it up to put up a small presentation on the final day. They will be guided by our galaxy of experts in the arts who will step in at different stages of the project and take them through the basics of writing, directing, designing and blocking the concept. Our faculty includes writing experts Chatura Rao and Hansa Thapliyal, Visual Arts expert Madhumita Srivastava, theatre person Shivani Vakil Sawant amongst others.

Age Groups: 7–10 yrs and 10–14 yrs

POMEGRANATES IN SUMMER!

Get ready for a wild ride. Our annual Summer module promises to be a roller coaster from session to session. Pomegranates in Summer! presents a unique 360° experience of creativity that incorporates new styles and approaches, offers a panorama of multicultural art forms and provides a vibrant space for creative development.

We have professionals from a variety of fields such as Theatre, Writing, Visual Arts who have evolved unique and dynamic methods to engage with children in an exciting and approachable manner. While the faculty this year comprises of such diverse professionals as Suruchi Aulakh (theatre professional), Anita Vachharajani (writer) Neha Turakhia (visual artist) and others, the unanimous aim in all sessions is to explore the most creative and lively ways of having fun!

THE FLYING CARPET

The Flying Carpet is a fantastic journey where children go through a gamut of creative expressions across different art forms, and gain exposure to a number of delightful stories from around the world. Under the expert guidance of our faculty of professionals, the children will learn to employ their own imagination, think independently and express themselves with words and images.

As the module progresses the children will start seeing the links between various forms of expression and each workshop is specially designed and conducted by established practitioners in a way where the children encounter a whole new process of creativity. Most importantly each day of the module becomes a discovery and the children express themselves freely with expert guidance.

Our celebrated faculty comprises experts such as author Anita Vachharajani, artist Neha Turakhia, storytelling expert Vaishali Kulkarni and others, who will lead the children through an exciting journey as they uncover their visual and verbal potential through various art forms.

ART WITH THE ARTISTS!

Already into its 3^rd batch, Art with Artists is our intensive technique-based Art workshop conducted by reputed Indian Artists. Sign up for a unique experience of art!

Art with the Artists is a workshop that provides you with the thrill of experimentation, the freedom of artistic expression and the skill to capture beauty in all its forms. Over this 12-week course our expert faculty will teach you basic techniques and guide you in the usage of several art materials: Basic Sketching, Watercolours, Oils, Acrylics, among others. All materials used at the workshop will be provided by us. Our faculty consists of Artists and Art experts Manjiri Thakoor and Anupam Singh who will impart their skills and experience to the participants in an easy, hands-on manner.

Art with the Artists is a unique opportunity to learn skills in art that will last you a lifetime. The workshop is open to all – irrespective of prior skill or experience. Let go the artist within you!

About Manjiri Thakoor: Manjiri combines two unique disciplines - Art and Ancient History. A Bachelor of Fine Art from the JJ School of Art, she has also pursued a Masters program in ancient Indian culture from the Mumbai University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Buddhist Art. She was former head of department of the Academy of Fine Art at Rachana Sansad, has taught heritage architecture at NM College and is currently working with the Prince of Wales museum on curatorial projects. She is also a consultant on various international heritage conservation projects.

About Anupam Singh: Anupam Singh received his art education from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (Bachelors in Visual Arts, 1997) and M.S. University, Baroda (Masters in Fine Arts, 1999) respectively. He has received fellowships which included an Artists Exchange Program to Amsterdam (Netherlands) and an Artists Residency at the Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad. He has participated in several exhibitions, artists’ workshops and public art projects. He currently lives and works in Navi Mumbai.

KNOW YOUR ART

We’re back with the very popular KNOW YOUR ART with Madhumita Srivastava, and this is an early bird alert to all those who were wait listed last time around. Please call in soonest...

Know Your Art is a 10-week foundation level course designed for anyone who wants to extend their appreciation of the visual arts. The aim of the course is twofold - to arrive at a better understanding of art through an examination of Western art and to sensitize us to the value of art in contemporary culture.

Our SPECIAL FEATURES include an extensive slide show in each session, which encapsulates a large body of work of the period under discussion, briefing notes in advance of the session and detailed painting lists and datesheets to enable further reference on the works discussed. In addition, the course concludes with a visit to a local gallery.

ARTISTS COVERED include great masters such Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Van Gogh, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Renoir, Mark Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky among others. In an effort to analyse how the painter, sculptor or architect uses art elements and materials as a means of expression and communication, the workshops will look at different styles, mediums, genres and techniques.

These slide illustrated workshops will move away from a conventional lecture format and instead take on a 'Show and Tell' approach. It will encourage a questioning attitude, individual interpretation and even hot debate – after all, art is subjective and we all have a right to form our own opinion and a right to choose art that we enjoy.

About Madhumita Srivastava: Madhumita has a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan which she followed up with a Masters in Fine Art (Design and Technology) from the Parsons School of Design, New York, with a specialization in broadcast design and motion graphics. She has been a visual designer for video, web and print media projects in India and the U.S. Madhumita's work spans a variety of assignments from art and set design for television shows to graphic design and video editing for "Metropolis as Metaphor", an exhibition in New York city, to creating and designing animated graphics for interactive digital media.

Madhumita has taught graphic design and digital video at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the United States, headed the Masters of Architecture program at Rachana Sansad Academy, Mumbai, and is also part of their Bachelors' program faculty where she introduces her students to new media in design and architecture.

WHAT'S YOUR STORY?

The Pomegranate Workshop presents What’s Your Story? a special workshop in Creative Writing conducted by Meera Godbole-Krishnamurthy.

Writing is an art, writing is a skill, writing is staring at a blank page the night before you have to submit an article, deliver a speech. Or you’re writing a script, and you can’t make it past the interval. Yet write you must. But how to go about it? How do you best present your ideas, how do you tell a good story?

It’s not so difficult really, once you know the basics. At What’s Your Story, we take you through the fundamental process of writing through the world of fiction.

What’s Your Story? is an 8-session workshop where writers of any level of proficiency – beginners or professionals – can find their voice and hone their craft under the guidance of author Meera Krishnamurthy. The workshop will explore the elements of Fiction such as Plot, Character, Setting, Conflict, Dialogue, Language, etc. through exercises and assignments geared towards achieving a mastery over the elements that make for good writing in general and good fiction in particular. The workshop promises a wide selection of representative reading, challenging writing activities and extensive feedback through collective critiques of the participants’ writing.

This workshop is open to all those looking to improve their writing skills – in fiction or non-fiction, irrespective of profession or previous experience. If you have a novel idea, we assure you it’s a likely story.

Meera Godbole-Krishnamurthy was born in Mumbai and has lived in the Philippines, France, and the United States. She studied art and architecture at Oberlin College and ColumbiaUniversity and received a Masters of Architecture from the University of Virginia. In the past several years, she has participated in writing workshops at Stanford University, the UniversityIowa Summer Writing Festival, UC San Diego Extension and the La Jolla Writers Conference. She has been an Adjunct at the New School of Architecture and Design in San Diego. As an artist, she has sold several paintings and shown her work at exhibitions in California. Balancing Act, her first novel, published jointly by Zubaan and Penguin India was released in October 2009.

THE FLYING CARPET

The Pomegranate Workshop brings you a workshop that’s simply out of this world! Ringing in the New Year, we bring you The Flying Carpet: an exploration of various forms of art and writing from different countries around the world.

The children will write Japanese Haiku poems and in the styles of Native American and African myth; they will sway their hips to exciting tribal dances; and discover Japanese painting, terracotta clay modeling and exciting illustration styles. The Flying Carpet promises exposure to entirely new forms of art, writing and performance for children through a fantastic journey that broadens the child’s own view of the world.

As always, our distinguished faculty consists of reputed professionals from different disciplines.

Gowri Rao (Bharatnatyam exponent) will introduce the children to the mythological story of the Dasavatar.

Parsuram Kumbhar – traditional clay modeling artist – will get each child to create the avataars in terracotta.

Anita Vachhrajani, a children’s author, will lead the children in writing Japanese Haiku poems and their own stories in the style of Native American/African writers.

Manjiri Thakoor – artist and art historian – will get the children to paint their Haiku poems in Japanese style.

Registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Last date for registrations is 1st February 2010.

Discover the Joy of reading!

Welcome to 2010, the year of Pomegranate! To start the year with a bang, The Pomegranate Workshop presents Chasing the Tale! – an exciting new workshop that invites young children into the magical world of books, to ease them into the process of reading in a manner that stimulates their imagination and promotes a love for stories from around the world.

Chasing the Tale! is a Storytelling and Reading workshop that boasts a special selection of books formulated by expert educationists and conducted by a faculty of storytellers, writers, artists and theatre, dedicated to bringing books to life in the minds of children. The faculty includes professional storyteller Vaishali Kulkarni, theatre actor Suruchi Aulakh, artist Sonie Thakkar, among others.

Over the course of the workshop the children will experience marvelous new ways to sharpen their imagination, enhance their vocabulary and acquire reading and verbal skills. In addition, the workshop offers a panoramic view of different cultures of the world through their stories as well as noticeable progress in their reading levels and powers of comprehension.

The workshop features renowned authors such as Roald Dahl and Dr. Seuss, popular tales such as Tuesday and Squids will be Squids and loveable loony characters such as Amelia Bedelia and Esio Trot. Truly a merry chase, Chasing the Tale is for those who fancy a few flights of fancy!

LEARN ART WITH THE ARTISTS!

Welcome to 2010! The Pomegranate Workshop kicks off the New Year with one of our most exciting new workshops yet: Art with the Artists – an intensive technique-based Art workshop conducted by reputed Indian Artists.

There is an artist trapped within all of us. A restless, confused artist bouncing off the walls in a padded cell deep within us. You know it – you’ve felt its sharp pangs all your life. When you look at a work of art, or an artist at work, and just wish that you could paint like that; when, out of the blue, you find yourself wondering where you’d be today if you’d gone to art school; when you buy paints and canvases on sheer impulse.

But what to do? Art is not a joke: it requires time, practice and guidance. At this age, who will teach us drawing and painting? And while we hesitate, and fear, and wonder, the artist in us continues to languish in its cage.

2010 is the year when the artist in you finds release. Art with the Artists is a workshop that provides you with the thrill of experimentation, the freedom of artistic expression and the skills to capture beauty in all its forms.

History In The Making!

A Three-Day Workshop Module

There are those who believe that a Museum is always only a serious institution. It is a place where you must always be quiet, even reverential; observe everything, do nothing. Above all, it is unthinkable to have ‘fun’ at a museum.

Remember these people. Spare a thought for them at Christmas. For they will miss out on all the fabulous and fun things we will be doing at the Museum this Christmas vacation!!!

This December, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) and The Pomegranate Workshop present History In The Making! - a unique opportunity for children to explore the rich and vast treasures of the Museum with ingenious new workshops that include visual art, creative writing, clay modelling and calligraphy.

Over the course of the workshop, the children will literally experience history in the making, as they revisit the techniques and materials used in the creative arts down the ages. Our multidisciplinary faculty boasts of a number of experts who have developed simple, tailor-made workshops where children apply their own imagination to spin new myths, paint their own stories, create ancient seals using clay and churn out water colour paintings of the museum itself.

And that’s not all: every session will include a visit to a part of the Museum conducted by the Museum Curators, where children can develop a familiarity with the pieces of heritage that reside within the Museum.

After all, if you’ve got all these cool things lying around since a thousand years, from totally way-out places like ancient India, China, Mesopotamia, Egypt and Europe, it would be a pity not to have some ‘fun’ with them. Right?

Saturday, 26^th December 2009

Outdoor Water Colour Painting

Participants will be taken through a brief history of the Museum and its Grade I heritage building and then taking advantage of the most suitable December weather, the participants will sit outdoors and paint their own picture of the Museum’s heritage building in water colours. Artists will take them through the basic process of visually breaking down the structure into basic forms and gradually building up a water colour painting complete the foliage surrounding the monument just as the children see it from where they sit.

Seal of Approval

The participants will be taken to the Coins’ Gallery and the Pre & Proto History Gallery of the Museum showcasing ancient seals and coins, with some information on the period in which they were used, stories about illustrious kings who introduced new seals or a different system of coinage. Then the participants can make their own seals using clay.

Quilling Time

In this workshop, participants will be made to explore the effect created by different scripts of calligraphy by practicing the use of different tools of calligraphy and then to create their own calligraphic compositions.

PICK UP A BRUSH!

The Pomegranate Workshop is back with a magical opportunity for children: to learn Art with professional Artists! Pick Up a Brush! is a workshop where children can interact with experts who will introduce them to the basic elements and techniques of Art. Pick Up a Brush! is a one-of-a-kind platform where five different artists will impart their skills to children across a variety of media: water colour, oil paints, charcoal shading, freehand drawing, pencil sketching, etc.

At Pick Up a Brush! children can look forward to acquiring or improving their skills in drawing, painting and sketching using a creative approach. Our distinguished faculty includes Artists such as Manjiri Thakoor, Anupam Singh, Sonie Thakkar, Prajakta Madane and Shriniwas Agawane who will interact with the children and introduce them to the basic techniques used to create Art with different mediums. Under the guidance of these masters of the Fine Arts, the children will create multiple artworks, explore different styles and materials, and gain exposure to different styles.

Pick Up a Brush! is an intensive workshop that seeks to equip children with basic skills in art that will last them a lifetime. Over 12 sessions held across 3 months, the children can look forward to developing their artistic imagination, channelising their inherent creative impulse and, most importantly, exploring new ways of creating magic with a paintbrush!

KALA SMRITI - INDIAN ART APPRECIATION

Kala, n: A Fine Art, an Art form
Smriti, n: "That which is remembered"

The Pomegranate Workshop proudly launches the 4TH edition of Kala Smriti - a basic, comprehensive course in Indian Art Appreciation, with diverse faculty who are established practitioners in the areas of visual art and cultural history.

With five leading experts drawn from the areas of visual art education, contemporary art practices and cultural and art history of India, this course encompasses the philosophical and mythological arenas of the Indian sub continent which are crucial to the understanding of this vast country’s visual art traditions and its current day practices.

Kala Smriti consists of 10 weekly sessions, and will be conducted by a pantheon of established and reputed professionals, teachers and practitioners of art such as Santosh Kshirsagar, Dr Radha Kumar, Manjiri Thakoor, Anupam Singh, and Geetu Hinduja. The sessions will consist of extensive slide shows and interactive discussions with the resource persons.

The course will cover ancient and medieval art (murals, temple sculptures, miniature painting) and then move into the realm of the modern with the Bengal School artists, before exploring the Bombay Progressive Artists Group and progress into contemporary and non representational art practices of well known 20th and 21st century Indian artists.

About Santosh Kshirsagar: With a Bachelor’s degree in applied art specializing in typography and calligraphy, and a master’s degree in Teaching Methodology from the J. J. Institute of Applied Art, Santosh has been teaching art at the undergraduate level for nearly two decades, first at the Sophia Polytechnic, and later, at the J.J. Institute of Applied Art. He is also a visiting faculty member at the Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay and the National Institute of Fashion Design. Santosh’s own work has been shown in several countries, including Australia, Belgium, Germany and Japan. His collected calligraphic art has been displayed at the Berlin Museum. He has also lectured at the British Museum and the Manheim Design School in Germany.

About Manjiri Thakoor: Manjiri combines two unique disciplines - Art and Ancient History. A Bachelor of Fine Art from the JJ School of Art, she has also pursued a Masters program in ancient Indian culture from the Mumbai University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Buddhist Art. She was former head of department of the Academy of Fine Art at Rachana Sansad, has taught heritage architecture at NM College and is currently working with the Prince of Wales museum on curatorial projects. She is also a consultant on various international heritage conservation projects.

About Dr Radha Kumar: Prof Kumar has been teaching Ancient Indian history, Culture and archeology at St Xaviers College, Mumbai for the last 16 years. She is an accomplished Bharat Natyam dancer and Sitar player with a Masters degree in both subjects. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Early Buddhism and is a free lance writer for various publications. She has the unique ability of being able to integrate the performing arts in the area of teaching and in her classes all lines between various disciplines disappear to present participants with a unique seamless experience.

About Anupam Singh: Anupam Singh is a visual artist, with several creative interests. He received his art education from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (Bachelors in Visual Arts, 1997) and M.S. University, Baroda (Masters in Fine Arts, 1999) respectively. He has received fellowships which included an Artists Exchange Program to Amsterdam (Netherlands) and an Artists Residency at the Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad. He has participated in several exhibitions, artists workshops and public art projects. He currently lives and works in Navi Mumbai.

About Geetu Hinduja: A gallerist and art consultant, Geetu Hinduja has been running The Fine Art Company, an art consultancy firm for the last 12 years. She will deal with the current market scenario and various media in use in the art world today.

Life is colour, and it is colour that reveals life to us. The Pomegranate Workshop presents Coloured Views by renowned artist Renu Iyer: a workshop that seeks to explore life – its various hues and shades – using colours that depict moods and give art its flavour.

Coloured Views is a 2-day workshop where participants can discover how colours help create evocative art, reveal character and enable a deeper understanding of personality. Under the guidance of our expert faculty, participants can use colours to depict themes and moods, portray emotions, and present feelings through their art. The workshop promises exciting experiments with different materials, painting and collage-making exercises – and a journey through the entire landscape of human emotions. Technique and self-expression combine to transform the way you view art – and yourself.

This workshop is open to all, irrespective of skill level or experience. Don’t be yellow!

Renu Iyer is a visual artist who studied Fine Arts at LS Raheja, Mumbai and MS University, Baroda. She has participated in many exhibitions -- most notably the Olympic Fine Arts (OFA) exhibition in 2008 in Beijing. She has been combining art and storytelling in workshops for children over the last few years, and has conducted numerous workshops for The Pomegranate Workshop.

Renu’s approach involves exploring art in different ways to arrive at fundamental art concepts – from line and form to aspects of colour. Her sessions combine self expression and technique and allow the participants to explore the basics of composition through an integrated step-by-step approach that involves observation, simple exercises and discussion.

What’s Your Story? with Meera Krishnamurthy

It’s not so difficult really, once you know the basics. We will explore the fundamentals and process of writing through the world of fiction.

What’s Your Story? is an 8-session writing workshop where writers of any level of proficiency – beginners or professionals – can find their voice and hone their craft under the guidance of author Meera Krishnamurthy. The workshop will explore the elements of Fiction such as Plot, Character, Setting, Conflict, Dialogue, Language, etc. through exercises and assignments geared towards achieving a mastery over the elements that make for good writing in general and good fiction in particular. The workshop promises a wide selection of representative reading, challenging writing activities and extensive feedback through collective critiques of the participants’ writing.

Meera Godbole-Krishnamurthy was born in Mumbai and has lived in the Philippines, France, and the United States. She studied art and architecture at Oberlin College and Columbia University and received a Masters of Architecture from the University of Virginia. In the past several years, she has participated in writing workshops at Stanford University, the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival, UC San Diego Extension and the La Jolla Writers Conference. She has been an Adjunct at the New School of Architecture and Design in San Diego. As an artist, she has sold several paintings and shown her work at exhibitions in California. Back in India since 2006, she is a consulting editor for Zubaan Mumbai. Balancing Act, her first novel, published jointly by Zubaan and Penguin India will be released in October.

TANFORMERS!

This September, gear up for a unique Math Challenge. Brains will buzz; fractions and primes will flow thick and fast; wild, imaginative designs of all shapes and contours will rise from mere tiles. The Pomegranate Workshop presents TANFORMERS, a brand new workshop that blends Creativity and Mathematical Reasoning in a dazzling combination for children.

Tangram, believed by some to be "the oldest Chinese puzzle," is an ancient Chinese play-puzzle with unique geometric pieces (called ‘Tan’) assembled into a square. These 7 geometric shapes can be assembled and reassembled in a range of imaginative designs to form cats, rabbits, birds, houses, people, robots, spaceships and countless more. Tangrams have fascinated children and adults alike for centuries, and were particularly popular in Europe. Children can develop Visual Thinking and Geometric Reasoning by making shapes from their own imagination and weaving visual narratives out of them.

Prof A G Rao of IIT-Bombay (Industrial Design Centre), who will be conducting the workshop, takes this ancient puzzle a step further to create new challenges for children. At Tanformers, children will explore not only the visual possibilities of Tangrams, but mathematical ones too. Prof Rao will include puzzles and exercises where the Tans are assigned numerical values and the children link them up to arrive at Math Concepts that actually form a design and can be creatively visualised. In addition, every child will receive a ‘Tangram Kit’ specially designed and manufactured for the workshop by Prof Rao.

At Tanformers, ‘learning’ comes out of the classroom and the boundaries between Math and Art are erased. If that’s a puzzling thought, your child will solve it here.

ABOUT PROF A G RAO

Prof Rao has been teaching at the Industrial Design Center (IDC) of IIT Bombay, the country's premier design institute for nearly 40 years. He runs a unique project called the Bamboo Studio at IDC. He has been studying bamboo as a medium for the last couple of decades, and works with craftspersons and artisans across the country.

Prof Rao has been designing and conducting some very unique workshops for The Pomegranate Workshop over the past year and has introduced the children to some fundamental concepts in design even as they had a whole load of fun in the process. His methods involve very hands on techniques where children conceptualize, visualize and execute in one seamless effort.

The Pomegranate Workshop is back with the classic Art and Story: a unique opportunity for young children to interact with experts in the fields of Visual Art and Creative Writing to unlock their creative potential.

At Art and Story, children will be introduced to basic forms of writing and art. They will write their own stories in different styles ranging from poetry to myth, and create artistic compositions using a variety of techniques such as mixed media collage, the illustration style of artist Eric Carle, etc. The workshops will be conducted by published authors such as Anita Vachharajani, Chatura Rao, Meera Krishnamurthy and visual art experts such as Madhumita Srivastava, Sonie Thakkar, Shrinivas Agawane and Prajakta Madane, amongst others.

What is Indianness in Art?

Why are such annoying questions raised every year on 15^th August, from school assemblies and boring talk shows to jingoistic films?

To show you why, this 15^th August, we take you back in time to when such questions were earnest and vital, and led to some exciting answers. What’s more, we do it through Art. The Pomegranate Workshop presents ‘Visions of Freedom’, a 2-session presentation-cum-workshop that explores the emergence of National Consciousness in Indian art and the artistic engagement with Traditional Indian Art in pre-Independence India. The workshop will be conducted by Anupam Singh, a practicing contemporary artist with a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from MS University, Baroda.

Visions of Freedom will explore the nature of linearity and colour in Indian art traditions through a slide-show, examining various art forms and artists from Ajanta painting, medieval painting, folk and tribal art to modern Indian art movements such as the Bengal School, Shantiniketan School, Progressive Group. Artists discussed include Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee Jamini Roy, M. F. Hussain, J. Swaminathan, Jyoti Bhatt, K. G. Subramanyan, Neelima Sheikh, Gulam Mohammad Sheikh, Tyeb Mehta, among many others. This will be followed by a practical workshop which will involve the participants in developing their own compositions by discovering the aspects of linearity and colour/texture and exploring what freedom and independence means to each in relation to our contemporary society.

One of the important and defining characteristics of traditional Indian Art has been the emphasis on Linearity and Flat Colour, where the line defines the form, unlike the play of light and shadow and the three dimensionality that define western art traditions. Lines were used to distinguish spaces, define textures, and provide scope for subtle craftsmanship; while the use of flat colour conveyed the dense colour-soaked life of India.

At a time when western systems of education were introduced at all levels and in all fields across India, there arose a different kind of ‘Modern Art’. Artists who were a product of their time brought with them a kind of alternative Cultural Nationalism in the realm of the visual arts, creating awareness about blindly adopting to western models of art making. One of the prominent means of spreading this nationalism and this awareness was to look back at past traditions, an emphasis on the aspect of linearity, usage of flat colour and developing the composition via various textures, thus developing a dialogue that was both political and cultural in its implications for attitudes of nationalism in Indian Art.

The workshop is open to participants at all skill levels. If you’ve never held a paintbrush before, we have simple techniques that will enable expression for you. If you are an artist looking to explore further, then this workshop holds great promise. The idea is to delve into the works of the great artists and go back in time to understand another era and the tremendous art that came out of it.

WESTERN ART APPRECIATION WORKSHOP

Know Your Art is a workshop series conducted once a week over a period of ten weeks beginning 11th Aug (Tuesday) and ending October 11 (Sunday), 2009 (All sessions on Tuesdays 7pm-9pm, except final session). This is a foundation level course designed for anyone who wants to extend their appreciation of the visual arts. The aim of the course is twofold - to arrive at a better understanding of art through an examination of Western art and to sensitize us to the value of art in contemporary culture.

Our SPECIAL FEATURES include an extensive slide show in each session, which encapsulates a large body of work of the period under discussion, briefing notes in advance of the session and detailed painting lists and datesheets to enable further reference on the works discussed. In addition, the course concludes with a visit to a local gallery.

Through this short program we offer you the opportunity to develop a visual and historical framework so that you may understand, interpret and develop an 'eye' for art. Important pieces of art will be studied and discussed through easy to understand approaches such as colour, composition, light & shadow, common themes etc. The starting point of the workshop series would be the Renaissance Period and major art movements such as Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art etc will be delved into, to get a broad understanding of the development and influence of Western Art.

ARTISTS COVERED include great masters such Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Van Gogh, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Renoir, Mark Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky among others. In an effort to analyse how the painter, sculptor or architect uses art elements and materials as a means of expression and communication, the workshops will look at different styles, mediums, genres and techniques.

The program will explore and address questions such as: How do you look at a work of art? What was the artist trying to express? How do we reconcile “Artist’s Intent” vis-a-vis our personal response to a piece of art? What makes an artwork? How do we know what we like? These slide illustrated workshops will move away from a conventional lecture format and instead take on a 'Show and Tell' approach. It will encourage a questioning attitude, individual interpretation and even hot debate – after all, art is subjective and we all have a right to form our own opinion and a right to choose art that we enjoy.

THIS COURSE IS OPEN TO ALL: the discerning connoisseur, the non artist, the lay person looking to develop their knowledge and understanding of art - so that just "looking" at art takes on a whole new meaning. In the end it's not just about understanding art alone but experiencing it, sensing its hidden meanings and discovering a love for it.

About Madhumita Srivastava

Madhumita has a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan which she followed up with a Masters in Fine Art (Design and Technology) from the Parsons School of Design, New York, with a specialization in broadcast design and motion graphics.

She has been a visual designer for video, web and print media projects in India and the U.S. Madhumita's work spans a variety of assignments from art and set design for television shows to graphic design and video editing for "Metropolis as Metaphor", an exhibition in New York city, to creating and designing animated graphics for interactive digital media.

She has been teaching graphic design and digital video for undergraduate and graduate students in the United States. Madhumita has been heading the Masters of Architecture program at Rachana Sansad Academy, Mumbai, and is also part of their Bachelors' program faculty where she introduces her students to new media in design and architecture.

History in the Making!

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) presents a unique opportunity for children to explore the rich and vast treasures of the Museum like never before. This May will find a galaxy of experts and practitioners in the fields of Visual Art, Performing Art and Story Telling who will lead the children on a magical journey of discovery into the art behind the history and the history behind the art.

The workshops are being jointly conducted by the Museum and The Pomegranate Workshop, a venture which works with over 30 practitioners in various art forms.

Over the course of the workshop, the children will literally experience history in the making, as they revisit the techniques and materials used in the creative arts down the ages. Our multidisciplinary faculty promises a feast to tempt any child’s imagination, with simple, tailor-made workshops where children apply their own imagination to create their own myths, paint their own stories in the miniature style, model terracotta clay, create their own water colour paintings of the Museum – and then experience the treasures of the museum itself.

And that’s not all: every session will include a visit to a part of the museum conducted by senior Museum curators, where children can develop a familiarity with the pieces of heritage that reside within the Museum. CSMVS premises will be innovatively used for various workshops which sensitize children to the beautiful architecture of the monument itself.

The Pomegranate Workshop unveils its Summer Workshops for children aged 7 – 14 yrs. Never before has summer been more exciting, more stimulating and more enjoyable for kids, for we bring you not one, not two, but THREE exotic summer holiday packages! Yes, our new exotic destinations include BANDRA AND JUHU, and as always, PRABHADEVI!

This summer at Pomegranate you can travel around the world as you explore a variety of different art forms from around the world with Sonie Thakkar (visual artist) and Anita Vachhrajani (writer); Go Native with Parsuram (traditional craftsperson), Mirabelle Da Cruz (dancer) and Lovleen Mishra (actor/writer); board the Art Express with top visual art specialists such as Madhumita Shrivastava and Anupam Singh; tread the Write Path with authors Sampurna Chattarji and Chatura Rao; create Unparalleled Cinema at our Film Making workshop with Hansa Thapliyal (film maker) and Lalit Tiwari (camera person) and Neeraj Vohralia (film editor)

SCREEN-PLAY!

Film Making Workshop

Venue: The Pomegranate Workshop, 14, Shantaram Nivas, Gokhale Rd, Dadar (W)

Dates: 4^th – 10^th May; Ages: 10 – 14 yrs

Film maker Hansa Thapliyal, film editor Neeraj Vohralia and cameraperson Lalit Tiwari – alumni of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Pune and established professionals in their respective fields will lead the children through the process of making their very own short film.

Hansa Thapliyal won the national award for best short film for her diploma film which was screened at various international festivals and has since been focusing on script writing and direction. Neeraj is a film editor and also teaches editing to post graduate students of mass communication at Sophia Polytechnic.

Right from conceptualizing the story, writing the script, planning the shoot, shooting the film and completing the edit, the children will go through the complete process of film making. As they work in the team the children will begin to understand their own strengths as well. The idea is to treat film making as yet another form of creative expression where the technical details are explained in a way the child can understand and assimilate.

The end result will be the creation of a film, a unique expression and experience the children will never forget. Not to forget a one-of-its kind opportunity to explore the creative potential of team work. The children will also benefit from maximum interaction with the faculty given the very restricted seats of 10 participants.

Timings: 10am – 2pm

Course fee: Rs. 4800/- including all material and a CD of the final film created by the children.

We have professionals from a variety of fields, ranging from Theatre, Writing, Visual Arts, Dance and traditional crafts who have evolved unique and dynamic methods to engage with children in an exciting and approachable manner. While the faculty this year comprises of such diverse professionals as Divya Bhatia (theatre professionals), Sampurna Chattarji, Chatura Rao (writers) Mirabelle Da Cruz (dancer), Sonie Thakkar, Anupam Singh (visual artists) and others, the unanimous aim in all sessions is to explore the most creative and lively ways of having fun!

FLYING CARPET

Ages: 7 – 10 yrs

FLYING CARPET is a fantastic journey where children will go through a gamut of creative expressions, ranging from theatre to writing and visual arts. Under the expert guidance of top notch professionals, the children will learn to employ their own imagination, think independently and express themselves with words and images.

Our celebrated faculty comprises experts like Divya Bhatia (theatre professional), Madhumita Srivastava (visual artist), Chatura Rao, Anita Vachharajani (writers) and others, who will lead the children through an exciting journey as they uncover their visual and verbal potential through various art forms.
